Powhatan County- Response to Federal Shut Down
There are many organizations working both together and independently to serve the citizens of Powhatan County throughout the Federal shutdown. While one of the most publicized concerns is SNAP and access to food, the County recognizes individuals and families are facing additional challenges such as inability to pay bills, rent, mortgages, home repairs, etc. Below is a "live" list of local resources available to assist at this time. It will be updated as community events are organized. There are instructions on this page to both receive assistance, as well as to help those in need. The entities below have expressed their ability to help the community during this difficult time.

- Assistance with fuel, wood, and electric as well as cutoff notices

Benevolence Program- Assist residents on a case-by-case basis with financial needs
- Participants are not required to be a member of the church
- Firewood ministry to help heat homes

- Call for referrals to specific local agencies for assistance with food, heating/cooling, home repairs, medical care, and prescription assistance
- Apply for benefits (although the Federal shutdown will delay processing, individuals and families are encouraged to apply).
- Reach out to the Powhatan County Domestic Violence Program
- Meet with a case manager to discuss safety options
- Receive advocacy and assistance with court procedures
- Get referrals to local support programs (medical, housing, mental health, peer support, etc.)

Habitat for Humanity-Powhatan

If you have critical repair need, please contact Habitat for Humanity. Critical home repairs range from:
- heating/cooling systems
- plumbing
- roof leaks
- electrical issues
- faulty railings
- unsafe steps
Guidelines include homeownership (you can still have mortgage payments), home insurance and meeting the household income limit.

- full-sized toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body soap, toothpaste, lotion, etc)
- feminine hygiene products

Many of Powhatan’s local non-profit organizations have stepped up to help during this challenging time. Supporting them through financial or item donations is one way to assist. Others are looking for volunteers to help serve the community.
