Purpose:

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission is a panel of citizens to act as a liaison between the public and advises the Board of Supervisors and County Administration on development, funding, programming, land acquisition, and maintenance related to Parks and Recreation activities and facilities. The Commission works closely with the Parks and Recreation Department on planning, sustaining, and improving parks and recreational facilities throughout the County.

Meetings:

The commission meets monthly to hear concerns, discuss issues, and provide input to the department about the operation of parks and recreation services. Citizens are welcome at the meetings, which are held the first Thursday of every month, except July and December, at 6 p.m. in the Parks and Recreation Department training room, located at the Pocahontas Landmark Center Recreation Center, 4290 Anderson Hwy, Powhatan, VA 23139.

Membership

Number of Members: Eight (8) - One (1) representative from each County district, one (1) ex-officio school board representative (non-voting), one (1) ex-officio representative from the Board of Supervisors, and the Parks and Recreation Director.

Term of Service: Members are appointed by the Board of Supervisors and serve a four-year term, or until a successor is appointed. Ex-officio members shall serve until a replacement is named or the incumbent vacates the seat due to absenteeism. Appointments follow the below schedule:

District 1, 3, 5 Supervisor Nomination - Odd years beginning 2023

District 2, 4 Supervisor Nomination - Even years beginning 2022
